Shattering The Glass Jar

Have you ever heard of the flea experiment? If you put fleas in a jar and close the lid, they will jump and hit the top, over and over again. Eventually, they learn to jump just below the level of the lid to avoid the pain. The truly chilling part? When you remove the lid entirely, those fleas will never jump out. They have been conditioned to believe that the ceiling is still there. They remain trapped in an invisible prison of their own making, long after the physical barrier has vanished.

For many women, this jar isn’t a metaphor—it is their reality. We are the fleas, and the lid was placed there generations ago.

We carry the invisible weight of ancestral patterns, following the silent scripts of the women who went before us. We watch our mothers and grandmothers sacrifice their desires on the altar of “duty”, and we subconsciously decide that this is the only way to be a “good woman”. We shrink ourselves to fit into the spaces left for us, never questioning who built the walls or why we are so afraid to leap over them. We have been conditioned to jump low, to stay safe, and to never, ever reach for the sun.

This conditioning manifests as the exhausting cycle of people-pleasing. We become chameleons, shifting our colours to meet the high expectations of everyone around us while our own needs go unmet. We are taught that our value is tied to how much we can do for others, how little space we can take up, and how quietly we can suffer. We aim for perfection because we fear that being “merely” ourselves isn’t enough. We are living for an audience that isn’t even watching, performing a role that was written for someone else.

Look closely at the choices you’ve made. Did you choose your profession because it sparked a fire in your soul, or because it was the “sensible” path expected of you? Many women find themselves trapped in prestigious careers—doctors, lawyers, accountants—not out of passion, but out of a desperate need to satisfy a societal or familial blueprint. Or perhaps you married not for a partnership of equals, but because you were taught that you needed to be “rescued”. We seek security in others because we haven’t been taught how to find it within ourselves. We trade our sovereignty for a cage that feels slightly more comfortable, only to realise the bars are still there.

The traditional 9-to-5 world is the ultimate reinforcement of the flea jar lid. it is a system designed to keep you small, trading your life-force for a pension and a pat on the back. It blocks your sovereignty by demanding your time, your energy, and your compliance in exchange for a ceiling on your worth. It tells you that this is “just how the world works,” but it’s a lie. It is a system built on the ghosts of industrial-age thinking that has no place in the life of a sovereign woman.

But here is the truth that will set you free: The lid is gone.

There is a whole new world waiting beyond the 9-to-5 grind. We are living in an era where freedom of choice is no longer a luxury for the few, but a reality for those who dare to claim it. There are opportunities that allow you to build wealth without sacrificing your soul, to lead without permission, and to create a life that honours your true essence. You do not have to follow the patterns of the past. You do not have to stay in the jar.

It is time to stop being the flea and start being the Queen. It is time to step out of the ancestral shadows, break the societal spells, and claim your sovereign crown. The only limit that truly exists is the one you choose to believe in. The world doesn’t need more people-pleasers or corporate cogs; it needs women who are brave enough to be exactly who they truly are.

The jar is shattered. The sky is yours. Will you finally dare to jump?
